Achilles Savas, 88

Marlborough – Achilles Savas, 88, died Tuesday Dec. 16, 2008, at Marlborough Hospital after an illness. He was the husband of the late Helen (Voutas) Savas, who died in 1994.

He leaves his son, Louis Savas and his wife, April; his daughter, Dorothy van Lingen and her husband, Theodore; his grandchildren, Carol Osbourne, Claudine White, Theodore van Lingen Jr., Julia Savas and Natalie Savas; and six great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John and Charles Savas.

Born in Marlborough, the son of Savas and Triantifilia (Constantine) Karagianis, he had lived in the city all his life. He was a 1936 graduate of Marlborough High School and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the 287th Bombardment Squadron and reaching the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Savas was a quality control inspector for the U.S. government at various locations in Central Massachusetts for over 35 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a lifetime member of Sts. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church in Marlborough, where he served on the parish council for many years and was an altar boy for over 25 years. He was a member of the Marlborough American Legion and enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. An avid fresh- and salt-water fisherman, he also golfed.

Funeral services were held Dec. 19 from the John P. Rowe Funeral Home of Marlborough and Sts. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church, with burial at Maplewood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund for the new Fellowship Hall at Sts. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church, 9 Central St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
