Region – Led by sensational senior Byron Jones, the Westborough High boys’ cross country team has had a fall to remember.

Jones captured his second straight Central Mass. Division 1 Cross Country Championship at Gardner Municipal Golf Course Nov. 16 and then followed it up with a fourth-place finish in the Division 1 state meet at Northfield Mountain Nov. 21.

The Rangers have enjoyed overall success as well, winning the Central Mass. meet and finishing 10th in the state meet.

With his victory in Gardner, Jones lowered his own personal best on the 2.9mile course, finishing in 14 minutes, 27.9 seconds. Last year he toured the hilly golf course in 14:38.

Jones ran with a pack of about a dozen runners for the first mile before surging into the lead as the race entered the second mile. Running with a confident stride Jones ran free and easy the rest of the way finishing with a strong kick over the final 300-yard straightaway.

Jeff Bush, Jones’s senior teammate, was the only runner with 15 seconds of Jones in the race. Bush finished in 14:36. Westborough’s Brendon Robertson also finished among the top 25 in the race, coming in 11th in a time of 15:27.

At the state meet Jones covered the hilly, 3.1-mile course at the Northfield Recreation Center in 16:19, Bush came home in 17:01, good for 20th overall. Robertson finished 66th overall (17:43).

Shrewsbury, Algonquin, St. John’s X-C teams also perform well

Shrewsbury finished in third place in the Central Mass. Division 1 meet, scoring 76 points, just five behind Westborough’s winning score. Algonquin finished fifth (138 points), St. John’s sixth (149) and Hudson 10th (303).

John Murray was Shrewsbury’s top finisher, third overall, in 14:44. The Colonials Chris Favulli was 10th overall (15:22), Curtis Beals 19th (15:40), C.J. Williams 21st (15:44), and Tobin Dancy, 23rd (15:48).

Murray was 13th overall at Northfield Mountain, finishing in 16:45. Favulli was 48th overall (17:28), Beals was 80th overall (17:50), Williams was 82nd overall (17:53), and Dancy finished 111th (18:20).

Algonquin’s Robert Clayton finished 13th overall, touring the course in 15:34. Teammate Jes Schow was 16th (15:38), Tony Fierimonte 20th (15:41). Schow finished 67th overall in the state meet, finishing in 17:44). Fierimonte was 92nd overall (18:01), Clayton 103rd overall (18:11).

St. John’s Daniel Zawalich finished seventh overall in 15:03. In the state meet Zawalich was the 17th overall finisher (16:58).

Oram is top local finisher

Marlborough High’s Ally Oram was the top female finisher among local Division 1 schools competing at the state meet at Northfield Mountain on Nov. 21.

Oram finished 57th overall, covering the 3.1-mile course in 21:09.

Shrewsbury High placed all seven of its runners in the top 150, led by Lili Urso, who was 77th overall, in 21:38. The Colonials Erin Manning was 94th overall (21:59), Becca Tiernan 112th overall (22:36), Stephanie Kalinowski 127th overall (22:56), Katherine DeZutter 127th overall (23:24), Nicole Ross 135th overall (23:28) and Krissy May 148th overall (25:40).

Algonquin’s Frankie Mueller finished 87th overall in the state Division 1 meet, finishing in 21:50.
