What’s the coming year look like? “I see slow growth,” said Barbara Cantwell, financial advisor at the Edward Jones office in Northborough. “We have diff erent opportunities now than in 2008-2009. In those years, the yield curves for bonds were wonderful, the best bond environment in 40-something years. Now it’s the best equities environment for large companies which are paying dividends.”

“My clients who were close to retirement or in retirement had already reallocated for their time horizon and income needs. Not because I’m a genius; nobody could have predicted this, but because I knew their goals. I really work hard to put clients in a portfolio that will take care of their needs.”

What should people think about before they start to work with you? “I tell people that I’m like a doctor,” she said. ”I need to know everything. I need to look at your total financial picture. I’m not a broker selling the hottest stock. There’s a check list I send out. I also have them think about their hopes and their dreams. We can budget and save, but if we don’t understand what we’re budgeting and saving for, it doesn’t make any sense.

“I really work at helping them figure out what’s important. I worked with one couple and they were all set for retirement. But he thought they were moving to Kentucky and she said, ‘There’s no way I’m leaving my grandchildren.’ And here they are ready to retire. So part of the process is thinking about it and talking about it.”

What investments are you recommending? “I’m reallocating a little out of bonds. They’re expensive and not as good a value now. I like large companies that are paying dividends and are based in the United States or Europe but doing a lot of international business.

“You have to be very careful with annuities, but, when I’m developing a pension for someone, there are some products that give a guaranteed income and that might fit because fewer people have pensions now.

“I’m not a broker who’s on the phone calling up people because I think there’s a great stock idea. I build stock portfolios, but it’s according to what I’m trying to solve for my clients.”
