EDITORIAL: Another ‘dam’ slowdown on Route 9Shrewsbury – There's no denying that the Kenneth F. Burns Bridge, which spans Lake Quinsigamond and serves as a major connector between Shrewsbury and Worcester via Route 9, needs to be updated. The bridge, which was built in 1916, will be replaced starting early next year as part of the Patrick-Murray Administration's Accelerated Bridge Program. The $137 million price tag will be picked up by the Federal Highway Administration and MassDOT Highway Division. That may be little comfort, however, to the thousands of commuters who use the bridge daily, especially as they were enjoying the fact that lengthy renovations have finally been completed just down the road in Shrewsbury.
