Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury High School (SHS) Alumni Association has awarded scholarships to four outstanding members of the SHS Class of 2011. Alumni Council member Maria Smith presented this year's SHS Alumni Association's Scholarship for Achievement to Trina Parks. Recipients had been asked to recognize someone who's helped or inspired them along the way; Parks thanked drama teacher Jennifer Webb.

The Robert M. Defino Class of 1955 Memorial Scholarship was established by members of the Class of 1955, and is given in memory of Bob Defino. Defino was class president and a three-sport athlete while at SHS, and, in the years before his passing, he was an integral member of the Alumni Council. Gail Bisceglia presented the award to this year's winner, John McBride. McBride's invited guest was Matt Wheeler.

The Lester “Pop” Dyer Award for Citizenship is given in memory of the former Shrewsbury teacher, Coolidge School principal, and superintendent of schools. Dyer's grandson, Marc Rischitelli, presented this year's scholarship to Jessica Sebring, whose inspiration was her father.

The Kathleen Viscardi Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has been an active member of the SHS Speech & Debate Team. It honors a student whose involvement on the team embodies “Mrs. V's” dedication, as well as her conviction that the greatest rewards come from simply participating. Speech & Debate Team alumna Christina Manos presented the award to Sneha Walia. Walia's special guest was current Speech & Debate Team advisor Marc Rischitelli.

The evening's featured speaker was former Assistant Principal Kenneth Largess. His SHS classmate and Alumni Association President Judith Donahue presented Largess with a plaque, thanked him for his many contributions to Shrewsbury's schools and students, and wished him well in retirement.

The SHS Alumni Association wishes to thank Scholarship Chair Christina Manos, the members of the selection committees, and members of the Alumni Council for contributing to the evening's success. For more information, visit the Alumni Association website at www.shrewsburyalumni.org.
