Westborough to auction off equipment, bicycles

By Bonnie Adams,  Government Editor

Westborough – The Board of Selectmen approved a request at their Oct. 11 meeting from John Walden, the Department of Public Works manager, to hold an auction of surplus town equipment some time during November.

There are approximately 12 items on the auction list so far, he told the board, including several older cars, vans and a leaf blower. Most of the items are not in working order, but rather are a good source of parts, he noted.

Police Chief Alan Gordon added that the police department would also once again be auctioning off confiscated bicycles as part of the auction.

Gordon said the department finds many bikes abandoned throughout the town on a regular basis.

“For whatever reason, they are just left around. In some cases they may have been stolen, but nobody ever follows up and reports it,” he added.

Gordon was not sure how many bicycles presently are in storage but in previous years, there have been as many as 50 or 60.

“Some of them are not in great shape,” he said, “but some are in good working order. We end up selling them for just pennies on the dollar.”

Walden was not sure when the auction would be held, but told the board it would be posted on the town's website and the date would also be given to the local media.
