Region – Today is Wednesday, May 16, the 137th day of 2012.
Nowadays the Academy Awards are a major production, with the show itself being broadcast all over the world. But on this day in 1929, the Academy held its first ceremony in a much smaller venue, the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. After a long dinner and many speeches (some things never change), the awards were given out in a ceremony that lasted all of five minutes. Not only that, but the winners had already been announced in February!
On this day in 1770, Marie Antoinette, the woman who was best known for the line “Let them eat cake” married Louis, the French dauphin. Their reign of greed and gluttony, summarized by Marie Antoinette's famous line, “Let them eat cake” when told of the impoverished French peasantry, did not go over well with the public. Ultimately, both were beheaded by opposition forces during the French Revolution.
Today's birthdays include the singer who introduced a new catch phrase – wardrobe malfunction – into our everyday language, Janet Jackson, (1966), actor Pierce Brosnan (1953) and actress Megan Fox (1986).
