Matthew J. Murray, 44Shrewsbury – Matthew J. Murray, of Shrewsbury, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, after a courageous struggle with Multiple Myeloma. He was 44.

Matthew was born in Boston on January 11, 1968 a son of Andrew E. Murray Sr. and Virginia M. (Barry) Murray. Raised and educated in Northborough, he was a proud graduate of Saint John's High School, class of 1986. He then earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from UMASS – Dartmouth in 1990 and his Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in 1994. While in both high school and college Matt played hockey, the sport he loved most. He married Carla J. Fuhrmann on February 22, 2000. They lived in Auburn for many years before building their home in Shrewsbury 5 years ago.

Matt was a Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant who was the head supervisor of the Criminal Information Section in Maynard. He entered the Massachusetts State Police Academy on June 15, 1992. He graduated on October 16, 1992 and became a Trooper. He was promoted to Sergeant on January 23, 2005 and further promoted to Lieutenant on July 24, 2011. Throughout his early career he worked as a uniformed Trooper in Troops B, C, & E. He went on as an investigator in the State Fire Marshall's Office, then to the State Police Headquarters Staff and then a supervisor in the Public Relations Section, and was currently assigned to the Criminal Information Section. He belonged to the State Police Commissioned Officers Association. Honored with numerous achievements, citations and awards during his career Matt absolutely loved his work and the brotherhood of his Troopers. He will be so very much missed.

Diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma over 7 years ago he persevered and fought until the end. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4) In these 7 years he was able to create many memories with his family and friends. His interests and wishes in life were simple: Matt enjoyed camping, coaching his boys in Shrewsbury Little League, working hard and coming home to be with his family and the embrace of his boys as he arrived; or travel to many places but his favorite was Bermuda.

In addition to his wife, Carla, he leaves his sons, Aidan and Justin; his mother, Virginia M. Murray of Northborough; his father, Andrew E. Murray Sr. and his wife, Sheila, of Pocasset; his siblings, Mary Kernan and her husband, Walter, of Woodbridge, Connecticut, Dianne Young and her husband, John, of Holden, Andrew Murray Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, of Shrewsbury and Virginia Massey and her husband, Bruce, of Farmingdale, Maine; his step-brother, Matthew McQuade and wife Jennifer, of Holden and his step-sister, Megan Hart and husband, Tony of Scarborough, Maine; nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Matt's life by gathering for calling hours at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 3 to 8:00 p.m., and again at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Sept. 19, before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
