St. Mary's Credit Union to open branch in WestboroughWestborough – The Board of Selectmen approved at its Sept. 11 meeting site plan reviews for two businesses looking to locate in town – St. Mary's Credit Union and the Pall Corporation.

The board approved the site plan for St. Mary's Credit Union to move into the now-vacant Friendly's restaurant on Route 9, across from the McDonald's restaurant on Route 30. That location has been shuttered by the Friendly's Corporation since Oct. 2011.

The site plan proposal was presented to the board by Jim Petkwich, a representative from St. Mary's, Attorney David Gadbois and Michael Scott of Waterman Design Associates.

Petkwich told the board St. Mary's would soon celebrate its 100th anniversary and bank officials were excited to be opening a first-ever branch in Westborough. He said the Friendly's restaurant would be “totally demolished” and replaced with a 3000-square foot one-story building.

The outside footprint will be constructed to ensure adequate and safe entrances and exits into the lot, especially in regards to busy Route 9, the men all noted.

Selectman George Barrette said thanked the men for their presentation and added, “It will be wonderful to have you in Westborough. I am sure you will be a great asset.”

The board also approved a site plan review for the Pall Corporation, a filtration company in the life sciences field. The company will be moving into space at 20 and 26 Walkup Drive, which has been vacant for the past six years. According to John Paul of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, who was representing the company at the board meeting, Pall will be making improvements to the parking lot and landscaping around the building.

Selectman Denny Drewry noted that improvements to that area were much needed.

“This is a win-win situation for the town,” he added.

In other business, the board discussed with Police Chief Alan Gordon an article pertaining to bow hunting that will appear on the warrant for the Monday, Oct. 15 Special Town Meeting. Gordon told the board that he is requesting a change to the town's bylaws that would allow hunting with a bow and arrow on all publicly-held land and if approved by the land-owner, on private property as well.

“Almost every night during the fall we have a report of a vehicle hitting a deer,” Gordon told the board. “There's over 60 hit a year. Every accident with a deer gets reported – that then affects everyone's insurance rates.”

Hunters will still need to follow all the regulations but this measure would help to “cull the herd” and reduce the number of deer-related accidents, he added.
