Westborough – A commitment to helping those in their community and honoring the town's veterans were the focus of the monthly assembly held at the Annie E. Fales Elementary School Nov. 9.
Led by school counselor Dana Catarius, the school has been collecting items for the town's food pantry. Thus far, 494 items have been collected during this school year, Catarius told the children, with 197 items in the first week and a half of November alone.
The school's principal, Maryann Stannard, spoke to the students about Veterans Day. Being in the military affected not only those who were serving, but their families as well, she said.
“We need to take a minute and stop and say “thank you” to not only all of our veterans but also their families,” she said. “They also sacrifice a lot.”
Stannard then showed the children a short video that highlighted the emotional reunions of many service people and their families.
“They are so young but I thought this was a nice way to show them,” she said after the assembly, “the toll it takes on families when a loved one is away in the service.”
