Philip Salah, 87

Westborough – Philip Salah, 87, of Westborough, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 at the Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation. He was the husband of the late Shirley A. (Hemstead) Salah.

Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late Michael and Beatrice (Wright) Salah and was educated in Worcester schools.

Phil was a musician's musician. Not only was he an excellent drummer, but an outstanding teacher. He started teaching in 1947 and quickly acquired, by word of mouth, many young students. From that time on he had been on the go doing what he loved: teaching drums and playing in just about every nightclub in and around Worcester. He had many offers to travel with big bands and small combos, but didn's, as the students always came first.

Phil is survived by his brother, Robert Salah of Westborough; his nephews, Robert Salah, Jr. and his wife, Marianne, of Northborough and Joseph P. Salah of Worcester; his nieces, Sr. Roberta Salah of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Springfield, Michele Cimmino and her husband, Christopher, of Union, CT, and Ann Marie Salah of Westborough; a sister-in-law, Hazel Doherty of Cherry Valley; nephews Jay Doherty of Cherry Valley, Daniel Doherty of Cherry Valley, Ross Doherty and his wife, Pollysean, of Worcester; great-nephews Jake Dohert of Worcester, Anthony Cimmino of Union, CT; great-niece Amy Doherty of Worcester; and great-nephews, Jeremy H. Salah of Waltham and Michael R. Salah of Dudley.

His funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 16, at 10:30 a.m., in the Britton-Summers Funeral Home, 4 Church St., Westborough. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Federation of Musicians, Local 143, P.O. Box 342, Petersham, MA 01366.
