Northborough- The public is invited to attend a special event Saturday, Dec. 8 to help raise money for a new bullet-proof vest for Shrewsbury's police dog, “Buzzy.”

Companion Pet Sitting/K9 Hydrotherapy in Northborough will be featuring a “Pictures with Santa” fundraiser event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day at K9 Hydrotherapy, 367 West Main St., Northborough. Award-winning photographer Jeffery A. Baker, of Visions by Baker, Worcester, is also donating his services for the fundraiser.

Area residents are invited to have their pets” photos taken with Santa (aka Shrewsbury Patrolman Chad Chysna, who is also Buzzy's handler). 5 x7 digital photographs will be available immediately for purchase. Photos are $15 for one 5×7 and $25 for two.

Barbara Smith, owner of Companion Pet Sitting/K9 Hydrotherapy and organizer of the Pictures with Santa fundraiser, has had Buzzy as a client for grooming and hydrotherapy services.

“For years Buzzy has been helping protect area citizens,” she said. “Now we'se returning the
favor by helping protect Buzzy.”

Police service dogs, commonly known as K9s, are used widely to sniff out explosives, contraband drugs and hidden weapons. In the course of duty K9s are often attacked. Unlike humans, dogs that suffer severe stab or gunshot wounds rarely survive. ?A bullet- proof vest, typically made of Kevlar, protects K9s from harm. The vests, custom made to fit each dog, range from $1,100-1,500. Buzzy has been using a second-hand vest for the past several years.

Photo sittings are by appointment only – call 508-393-3370 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
