Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury High School (SHS) students and faculty gathered at the Shrewbury Towers April 13 to raise the spirits of the residents there who had their cars vandalized earlier this week. The school collected donations from students during their lunch period for this community service project and in one day raised $350.
The volunteers raked the grounds and planted perennials, which were donated by State Rep. Matthew Beaton, R-Shrewsbury, who is a member of the SHS Service Learning Advisory Board. Afterwards they grilled hotdogs and hamburgers for residents of the Towers.
“That vandalism doesn's represent our community well at all, and I think us coming today and trying to help is a display that we'se a caring community,” assistant principal Gerald “PJ”?O’Connell said. “We'sl reach out to people in need and try and create a different culture in town.”
