Obit George BroderickShrewsbury – George J. Broderick, died Sunday, May 12, 2013 in UMass Medical Center in Worcester. He was 74.

He was born June 13, 1938 in Worcester, the only child of the late John A. and Marion (Crowe) Broderick. A graduate of the former Commerce High School, he attended Clark University with the class of 1959. Hee served in the Air National Guard.

On October 3, 1964 he married Mary A. MacKoul in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Worcester. Residents of Shrewsbury for over 49 years, he was active in town while his sons were playing sports and attending school.

He had sales in his blood and was very good at it. For over 51 years, he was the National Accounts Manager for A.B. Dick Products Co and Ricoh, representing for the Offset Printing Equipment. He loved his work but enjoyed retirement in 2008.

George was a member of Saint Mary's Church, and for over 60 years attended the annual Novena to St. Francis Xavier at Saint John's Church on Temple Street in Worcester. He was active in body all his life, as well. He was a 2nd degree black belt in judo and owned and operated the original Worcester Judo Club. In 1964 he was the New England Heavyweight Champion in black belt division and competed in the Olympic trials in New York City the same year. Always keeping active and healthy he was a member of the former Catalina Health Spa in Shrewsbury.

George loved Irish music and he was a loyal follower of Michael Flatley's “Lord of the Dance” concerts and performances. Retirement afforded him more time to be with his grandkids at all their activities. He enjoyed a daily visit to the Centre Café in Shrewsbury for his coffee and conversation with some of the regulars. He and Mary would take some day trips, a Red Sox or Patriots game. A proud Saint John's father it was with great pride he loved watching his sons sporting events and their graduation from school.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he leaves his sons, Dr. John G. Broderick and his wife, Kim, of Lincoln, Rhode Island and James G. Broderick and his wife, Nancy, of Shrewsbury; his grandchildren, Jamie M. and James T. Broderick of Shrewsbury; his in-laws, George MacKoul and his wife, Paulette, of Millbury, John MacKoul and his wife, Gloria, of Worcester and Eleanor Graves and her husband, Jack, of Clinton; and nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember George's life by gathering for calling hours Wednesday, May 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center, and again at 9 a.m. Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery of Shrewsbury.
