Hudson – Joao Chaves, 85, of Hudson, died Sunday, June 23, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eugenia (Loura) Chaves of Hudson.

Joao was born and raised in Santa Maria, the Azores of Portugal, son of the late Bernardino and Umbelina (Sousa) Chaves. He had been a longtime resident of Hudson, and was employed as a technician by the Digital Equipment Co. for many years until his retirement.

Joao enjoyed tending to his garden in his spare time, but, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Saint Michael's Parish in Hudson.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Aida Chaves and her husband Manuel, John Chaves and his wife Estrela, all of Hudson, and Ana Maria Hoover and her husband Earl of Hopkinsville, Ky. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Amanda, Bethany, and Jeffrey Chaves, all of Hudson, Paul Stochaj of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jeremy Stochaj of Louisville, Ky; his sister, Helena Sousa of Taunton; his two brothers, Jose Chaves of British Columbia and Jose Maria Chaves of Santa Maria, Portugal; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Maria Freitas, Emilia Freitas, Agostinho Chaves, Antonio Chaves, Angelo Chaves, and Manuel Chaves.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 26, at 9:00 a.m., in Saint Michael's Church, 21 Manning St., Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Hudson. Family and friends may attend calling hours Tuesday, June 25, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joao may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
