Shrewsbury – Marie M. Leary, 88, a longtime Shrewsbury resident passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 in The Rose Monahan Hospice Residence, surrounded by her loving family.
Marie was born, raised and educated in Berlin, Germany. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Martha Zernick. She married the love of her life, Paul J. Leary, April 19, 1950. They started their family and moved to Shrewsbury in 1968. She spent her years caring for, nurturing and raising her children.
Marie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her needs were few and her gifts to all were many. Family was very important to her; her day was always complete when she was with her family. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, travel, and weekly card games, and was an outstanding cook and baker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul J. Leary, Dec. 2, 2012. She leaves her loving children, James J. Leary and his wife Joanne of Shrewsbury and Mary M. Mayer and her husband John of Colchester, Vt.; three grandchildren, Christine M. Purcell and her husband Thomas Vukmirovits of Shrewsbury, Kate Whitney and her husband Dustin of Winooski, Vt., and Kevin Mayer and his wife Jillian of Branford, Conn.; and five great-grandchildren, Erin, Isabella, Benjamin, Austin, and Jackson. She is also survived by a sister, Ruth Lamberty of Berlin, Germany, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Marie's family Monday, Oct. 7, from 5 – 8 p.m., in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. Funeral services for Marie will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 11:30 a.m., in Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster St., Worcester. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
