Natick: Free exercise classes at Whitney Place

Natick – Have you resolved to get a bit healthier in the New Year? In January, Whitney Place Assisted Living Residences at Natick will begin offering three weekly exercise classes that can help you meet your goal, at no cost.

Muscle conditioning and flexibility classes, Tai Chi chair classes, and Sit & Be Fit classes will take place in the Harriet Beecher Stowe Community Room at Whitney Place. Plenty of free parking is available.

The classes are free and open to the public, with no pre-registration required. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that's easy to move in.

Playful Muscle Conditioning/Flexibility will be held Tuesdays at 2 p.m. The one-hour class is designed to improve the body's fitness, well-being, and overall functioning. Every class will be different, using things like flexibility noodles, arm and leg stretch and strengthening bands, and light weights. The class will include chair exercises, cardio breathing, and balance work. It's taught by Joanne Schmalenberger, a well-known Natick fitness instructor who has more than three decades of experiences.

Chair Tai Chi will be held Wednesdays at 2 p.m. This gentle exercise program brings the benefits of traditional Tai Chi Chuan to the comfort and safety of a chair. The 45-minute class allows people who cannot stand or who lack confidence with their balance, such as those who use a walker, wheelchair, or have a movement disorder, participate and benefit from this ancient exercise form. Tai Chi promotes balances, flexibility, ranges of motion, strength, and energy while reducing pain and stress. The class will be led by Sylvia McManus, who has more than 35 years” experience in Tai Chi and yoga.

Sit & Be Fit will take place Fridays at 11:15 a.m. This 45-minute class is for all abilities – from beginners to those looking for a more vigorous routine. Participants will engage all muscles in their bodies with cardio work and some arm weights, all while seated securely in a chair. The class is taught by Whitney Place recreation coordinator Jazz CVitan.
