Region – Wrestlers from the Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA) and Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS), under the direction of new Head Coach Matt Schiller, traveled to Foxborough High School Feb. 21 for a two-day Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division 3 wrestling tournament.

Three members of the team, all AVRTHS students, had qualified the previous weekend at the Division 3 Central Massachusetts sectionals. John Cone, wrestling at the 160-pound slot, entered the tournament ranked third in Central Massachusetts. Cone was able to battle back after an initial loss and placed fifth for Division 3.

Derek Yanchewski, in the 220-pound weight class in his first year back in the sport, entered the tournament ranked first overall for Central Massachusetts and placed fourth for Division 3. Wrestler Keith DeAmicis, in the 195-pound class, had qualified for the tournament by placing third at sectionals, but was injured and unable to compete.

Both Yanchewski and Cone will head to the All-State Tournament in Lowell at the Tsongas Arena Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1.
