Obit Margaret Rakauskas_cropShrewsbury – Margaret (Peg) Rakauskas, 87, a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, surrounded by her loving family, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness.

She leaves her loving husband of 57 years, Vitie S. Rakauskas; a son, Stephen J. Rakauskas of Sutton; two daughters, Lorri P. Rosenbruch-Gerry of Nashua, N.H. and Nancy E. Hurley of Portland, Or.; two grandsons, Andrew Rakauskas and Alec Rosenbruch; two granddaughters, Leslie Rosenbruch and Alissa Rakauskas; and many nieces, nephews, and relatives in Ireland. Two sisters, Myra Stegman and Joan Tansey, and a brother, James Finnegan, predeceased her.

She was born in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., the daughter of James and Brigid (Navagh) Finnegan. She graduated from Lynbrook High School in Lynbrook, N.Y. and was employed by several radio stations in New York City as an Executive Secretary prior to moving to Shrewsbury in 1948. She was employed by W.D. Smith, Inc. in Shrewsbury for 10 years prior to her retirement in 1986.

Margaret was a longtime active member of St. Anne's Church, St. Anne's Alter Society, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of St. Anne's Human Services, Shrewsbury Woman's Club, the Italian American Victory Club, Shrewsbury Garden Club, and the “Out to Lunch Bunch” Fabulous Fifties. She was also a longtime member of the former St. Anne's Women's League.

Her outstanding service and dedication to the community of Shrewsbury was recognized with a Community Service Award by Rotary International and with the “2000 Citizenship Award” by the Italian American Victory Club.

The family would like to thank the wonderful care provided to Margaret by the doctors, nurses, and caregivers in the Intensive Care Unit/Pulmonary at the UMass Memorial Medical Center Lakeside Campus.

There are no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday April 15, at 11 a.m., at St. Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery of Shrewsbury. Arrangements are under the care of Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel of Worcester.
