Hudson – Maria L. Freitas, 74, of Hudson, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, surrounded by her loving family, at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late Jose Freitas, who died in 2003.

Maria was born on the island of S. Miguel, the Azores of Portugal, daughter of the late Joao and Laura (Pacheco) Soares. She was raised on the island of Sta. Maria, the Azores and resided there until 1974 when she immigrated to Hudson.

She worked for many years locally as a machine operator in the shoe lace manufacturing industry, most notably the Thomas Taylor & Sons Co. in Hudson. She was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson.

Maria enjoyed traveling, and always looked forward to her frequent trips back to S. Maria in Portugal. She enjoyed crocheting and reading in her spare time. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially with her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her loving care and spirit will be truly missed.

She is survived by her children, Fatima Resendes and her husband Jose, Maria Santos and her husband Antonio, Florinda Araujo and her husband Jorge, Ana Bela Paul and her husband D.J., all of Hudson, and Debbie Santos and her husband Jose of Shrewsbury. She was predeceased by her daughter, Maria R. Freitas. She is also survived by her two brothers, Jose Maria Soares and Eduardo Soares, both of Portugal; her 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Laura Arraial, Mariana Cabral, Rosa Rodrigues, Joao Soares Jr., and Daniel Soares.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, Oct. 6 in Saint Michael’s Church of Hudson, followed by burial in Saint Michael’s Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Maria may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Sarcoma Research Fund, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215-5450.
