Marlborough – Members of the Marlborough Junior Woman’s Club will celebrate 50 years of community service and fellowship Saturday, Oct.18, at a celebration at the Courtyard by Marriott. President Elizabeth Young and Junior Director of the General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) of Massachusetts Diane McCurley will welcome members and guests during a brief program, followed by dinner and dancing.
McCurley, a 30-year member of the Marlborough group, was named to the state position earlier this year. She is one of many long-time members who continue to enjoy serving the community with members who have a common purpose.
A charter member of the local group, Marilyn Perry continues to be an active member largely because they continue to focus on projects in support of children and families.
“I have been pleased that through the years the Marlborough Juniors have been steadfast in continuing the tradition of doing hands-on community service and organizing successful fundraising programs which benefit so many people but they still volunteer many hours helping people one-on-one,” she said.
The local group was formed in 1964 by women who were looking for a way to help the community and establish friendships. Many were new to the city and joined with long-time residents who welcomed their enthusiasm and support as they all embraced the guidelines established by the GFWC. Conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs were the established guidelines through which the club developed their programming. Several attended workshops on leadership training to help them become leaders in their community.
Early projects of the Juniors were establishing a walking trail at Holt’s Grove, planting wildflowers and transplanting endangered plants, sponsoring candidate nights at election time and establishing summer reading programs at the Marlborough Public Library. Major fundraisers through the years have included the Olde World Boutique held at Union Common, Charity Night Dinner Dance, children’s clothing sales, breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Thanksgiving pie sales, pictures with Santa, comedy and trivia night events, Dancing with Celebrities: Marlborough Style, Deal or No Deal, Death by Chocolate murder mystery, and the Best Prom You Never Had.
One of the characteristics of the Junior Woman’s Club is embraced in the GFWC motto: “Unity in Diversity,” which allows for a variety of programs and projects while working closely together in friendship and commitment. Other officers of the Marlborough Club are Tammy Short, vice president; Brenda Geary, secretary; and Linda Woodard, treasurer.
