Marlborough – Mayor Arthur G. Vigeant and Kelley French, chair of the Marlborough Youth Commission, announced that Marlborough has initiated a logo design contest for resident students to become involved in the city’s new campaign for drug and alcohol awareness.

The Marlborough Youth Commission’s effort is to establish a city-wide campaign involving local students, businesses, parents and youth organizations to better educate the community on the dangers and consequences of drug and alcohol abuse.

“It is essential that we, as a community, do all we can to put our children in the best possible position to make educated decisions in life,” Vigeant said. “Our Youth Commission sees the need to reach students outside of the classroom and engage the greater Marlborough community to join our efforts to create a safer, healthier environment for the city’s youth.

“We are so pleased to launch this campaign and involve our city’s youth with the development of the new logo of ‘A Healthy Me is Drug Free,’” French added. “What better way than to encourage young people to invest in helping themselves, their peers and their community with regards to drug and alcohol awareness?”

All Marlborough middle school and high school age residents can submit an entry to this contest. The first place winner will receive a $350 cash prize; the second place winner, $150; and the school or program that the first prize winner is affiliated with will be awarded $1000 for programming or equipment needs.

The winning logo will be featured as the symbol of Marlborough’s drug and alcohol awareness campaign to better educate all on the dangers and consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Students are encouraged to be as creative as they wish and must incorporate the “A Healthy Me is Drug Free” message.

Funding for this project was secured by Representative Danielle Gregoire, D-Marlborough, and comes from the Division of Substance Abuse Services under the Mass. Executive Office of Health and Human Services. Senator Jamie Eldridge, D-Acton, also lent his assistance, helping reinforce the priority of these funds.
