Southborough – The center of Southborough was bustling with activities Oct. 13 for its 41st Heritage Day Celebration, organized by Southborough Recreation. Festivities began the previous evening when the Southborough Rotary Club presented the 16th annual Light-Up Southborough. Over 200 carved and decorated jack-o-lanterns were still on display along Common Street for visitors to view before the parade.
A caravan of fire department vehicles began the parade with longtime Southborough resident and volunteer Pete DePina honored as the grand marshal. Other parade participants included town officials, political candidates, scout troops and youth sports teams. Music was provided by the marching bands of Algonquin Regional High and Trottier Middle schools.
The celebration continued at the St. Mark’s School field with vendors, artisans, a food court, children’s games, and representatives from nonprofit organizations and businesses. Live entertainment featured country music singer Jessie Chris of Southborough, a performance by SkyRise Children’s Theater and interactive demonstrations by the Algonquin Robotics Team.
Back after a hiatus of a few years, a scarecrow contest was offered with viewing in front of the Community House. This time, the competition was hosted by the Southborough Rotary
Club with proceeds going to the Southborough Cultural Arts Council.
Other activities included a book and bake sale sponsored by the Friends of the Southborough Library, and an open house at the fire station. The popular pie eating contest returned with lots of laughs and prizes awarded in three age categories.
