Shrewsbury – Fire Chief James Vuona released this statement this afternoon regarding a fire at the Shrewsbury Green Apartment Complex this morning:
Shrewsbury Fire Department responded to an Apartment Complex Fire at the Shrewsbury Green Drive Building 12 (Apt. G) at 2:38 a.m. today. The fire started on the exterior balcony of the second floor apartment (12-G) and extended up into the third floor balcony, roof area and apartment itself. First arriving crews from Shrewsbury Engine 2 controlled the fire using exterior attack hose lines to knock down the bulk of the visible fire. Additional crews from Shrewsbury Tower 1 extended hose lines to the second and third floors to extinguish fire that had penetrated walls and ceilings above the fire area of origin.
Evidence of cigarette smoking was found on the scene and remains the likely cause of the fire. There were no civilians or emergency responders injuries reported. Residents of the third floor apartment directly above the fire have been displaced due to fire and smoke damage to the apartment.
Fire Captain Seth Colby was the Incident Commander on scene and also investigated the fire along with the State Fire Marshal’s office. The incident scene was cleared at 5:5 a.m. and the building was turned back over the property management team.
