103114 rsNorthborough – After nearly twenty years as Northborough’s Fire Chief, David Durgin has announced that he will be retiring in June 2015. In addition to his 42-years as a career firefighter, Durgin has also served as Fire Chief in Hopedale.

As head of Northborough’s Fire Department, Durgin oversees a staff that responds to literally thousands of calls each year. The emergency responses run the gamut from fires to vehicular accidents and from hazardous spills to medical calls. In the event of a major event in surrounding communities, the fire department under his guidance, also stands ready provide assistance or coverage when needed. In the interests of public safety, the department also handles over 1,000 inspections on a yearly basis, helping to ensure the town’s homes and hundreds of businesses are up to code.

With approximately eight months until Durgin steps down, town officials said they will hire a consultant as they begin the search for a new chief.
