Westborough – Several hundred Boy, Girl and Venture Scouts navigated through the woods in the dark with just a map and compass at the Scout-O held at Nobscot Scout Reservation in Sudbury Oct. 24-26. Held annually the last weekend of October, this event allows Scouts to practice their map and compass skills both in the daylight and in the dark before competing against one another at one of three levels of difficulty. The object of orienteering is to find a series of flags in the shortest amount of time.

Five Westborough troops – 33 Scouts and 11 leaders – participated in the event, including Girl Scout Cadette Troop 30507, Girl Scout Cadette Troop 30508, Girl Scout Junior troops 11129 and 11130, and Boy Scout Troop 382.

Many Scouts also helped with the event, with Troop 30507 helping with registration and Mark O’Connell from Boy Scout Troop 382 organizing the night orienteering.

The New England Orienteering Club regularly offers events that are open to the public. Visit www.neoc.org for more information.
