Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury High School Colonials boys and girls basketball teams defeated the Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks in back-to-back games played Jan. 20.
The Shrewsbury girls squeaked by Algonquin 47-46 in the first game of the evening. Both teams stayed within several points of each other throughout the game and traded off sharing the lead. Algonquin senior Emily Carens was the overall top scorer of the game with 19 points, and junior Caroline Leonard contributed 12 points. Junior Hailey Moore was the top scorer for Shrewsbury with 16 points and senior Abby Joseph added 9 points. The Shrewsbury girls improve to 5-6 on the season while the Algonquin girls fall to 5-5.
The Shrewsbury boys defeated Algonquin 68-48 in the second game of the evening. Shrewsbury’s Kevin Akerson led all scorers with 17 points. Mike West scored 11 and Paul Durkee contributed 10 for Shrewsbury. Trevor Casellini was Algonquin’s top scorer with 12 points and Joe Egizi added 9. The Shrewsbury boys improve to 7-5 on the season while the Algonquin boys fall to 4-7.
