Westford – The Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Tomahawks girls basketball season ended Feb. 24 with a 40-39 loss to the Westford Academy Grey Ghosts in the first round of the MIAA Girls Basketball Central Division 1 playoffs. The game was played at Westford Academy.
The score was close throughout the entire game, with the Tomahawks holding on to a slim 36-35 lead with 1:16 remaining on the clock in the final period. With 43 seconds remaining, the Grey Ghosts scored to reclaim the lead 37-36, and then added one more on a foul shot with 19 seconds left on the clock. With just 4.2 seconds left, ARHS senior Emily Carens hit a lay up to tie it up at 38-38. Carens was fouled on the play, and hit one of her shots to give the Tomahawks a 39-38 lead. The Tomahawks were called for a foul themselves as the clock ran down to 0. The Grey Ghosts converted both of their foul shots to claim a 40-39 victory.
Senior Kendyl Finelli was the Tomahawks top scorer with 13 points. Junior Caroline Leonard scored 9 and Carens added 7 points. Karly Bigham was the top scorer for the Grey Ghosts with 13 points. The Grey Ghosts move on to play Franklin in the quarter finals on Feb. 27.
