Worcester – The Marlborough High School Panthers boys basketball team are the Central Mass. Division 2 champions after defeating the Concord-Carlisle High School Patriots by a score of 59-45 in the division finals playoff game held March 7. The game was played at Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Harrington Auditorium.
The Patriots jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game before the Panthers found their rhythm. The Panthers rallied to take a slim 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, and then surged to a commanding 40-21 lead at halftime.
Panthers’ freshman Chris Doherty was the game’s top scorer with 27 points. Sophomore Owen Cappadona scored 10 and senior Joe Cappadona contributed 8 points. Austin Hoey was the top scorer for the Patriots with 11 points.
The Panthers move on to play the West Division 2 champions in the state semi-final game, which will be held on March 10 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. The Patriots conclude their season with a 17-5 record.
