Oak Bluffs – M. Gertrude “Gert” Knowlton, 103, of Oak Bluffs, died peacefully Monday, May 11, 2015 at her daughter’s home in Oak Bluffs. She was the wife of the late Edgar L. Knowlton.

Born in Marlborough, she was the daughter of the late George F. and Mary Ellen (Clare) Pyne. Gert was raised in Milford, and was a graduate of Milford High School. She was a devoted mother and wife.

While raising her daughters, she also helped her husband run the family grocery store in Holliston. In 1991, Gert moved to Oak Bluffs with her daughter, Rosemary, and discovered her joy of painting with watercolors.

She is survived by her daughters, Janice Williams and her husband David of Marlborough, Rosemary Hildreth of Oak Bluffs, and Nancy Mahoney and her husband John of Southborough; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Barry C. Knowlton and Mark “Tony” Knowlton; her siblings, George R. Pyne II and Margaret Pyne.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 15, from 9-10:30 a.m., at Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Southborough. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at St Mary’s Church, 19 Winter St., Milford, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
