Obit Timothy HorganWestborough – Timothy John Horgan, of Westborough, formerly of Venice, Fla. and Belmont, passed away at 88 years of age Thursday, May 28, 2015. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Lois.

He was the proud father of fve sons, Timothy J. Horgan Jr. and his wife Maureen of Westborough, Dr. Matthew D. Horgan and his wife Elizabeth of Bath, Maine, Christopher P. Horgan of Belmont and former wife Debra Horgan of Dracut, Brian J. Horgan of Buffalo, N.Y., and Attorney Robert C. Horgan and his wife Caroline of Medfield. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three grandsons.

Tim served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean in WWII. After his service, he earned a degree from Tufts University, where he was Phi Beta Kappa. For the next 40 years, he was an award-winning sports columnist for The Boston Herald, where he was voted Massachusetts Sports Writer of the Year eight times. For 20 years, Tim was also a panelist on one of the first sports shows on WHDH.

He was named one of New England’s sports legends by the Sports Museum of New England. He was a founder of the Tufts Jumbo Club and past president of the Gridiron Club of Boston. He earned a third degree black belt in karate, and loved playing golf.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours at the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., are Sunday, May 31, from 4-6 p.m.
