Obit Salvatore SantoroShrewsbury – Salvatore Santoro, of Shrewsbury, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 5, 2015. He was 68.

Salvatore was born Aug. 29, 1946 in Serra di Pratola, Provincia di Avellino, Italy, a son of the late Antonio and Maria (Santoro) Santoro. After leaving Italy over 48 years ago, Sal first went to Canada where he learned English. He then settled in the U.S. where his first job was at Sossner Tool in Long Island.

He completed his education in the U.S. and received his Master’s in Quality Systems Management. He married Loredana Accomando Feb. 14, 1971 in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Inwood, N.Y. They moved to Shrewsbury in 1983.

Sal worked as a quality assurance engineer for Simonds International in Fitchburg for many years. He had a passion for quality and drove people to excel in their role. He was known for his strength, passion, his candid approach and, most of all, getting things done. He retired in 2009.

True to his Italian heritage, Sal was a fantastic cook and his signature dessert was his tiramisu. He took hospitality to an extreme in making certain that everyone who visited was well fed. He was a generous guy in all aspects.

In addition to his wife of 44 years, Lory, he leaves his children, Maria Santoro of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Anthony Santoro and his wife Elizabeth of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his three grandchildren, Bella, Emma, and Lyla; his sister, Severina Ballarano of Rosselange, France; his mother-in-law, Carmela (Sellitti) Accomando of West Hempstead, L.I., N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Giuseppe Santoro and his wife Angela.

Family and friends will honor and remember Salvatore’s life by gathering for calling hours Sunday, July 12, from 1-2 p.m., in Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center, followed by a prayer service at 2 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 15 in St. Thomas the Apostle Chapel, 875 Hempstead Ave., West Hempstead, N.Y., at 10 a.m. Final burial is in Serra di Pratola.
