Region – RTN Federal Credit Union has announced the 2015 recipients of its James A. Burley Jr. Scholarship Award. The monetary prizes totaling $10,000 are conferred annually to three college-bound students whose parents are Credit Union Members.
Megan LaPlante of Framingham received the top prize of $5,000; she will be attending the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H., this fall. Daniel Thornton of Merrimac earned $3,000 as the second-prize recipient; he will be a freshman this fall at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. Margaret Coppinger of West Roxbury took home a third-place prize of $2,000; she will be attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
The annual award is named in honor of RTN’s late Chair and Director James A. Burley Jr., who served the credit union for more than 30 years. Scholarship recipients are selected based on their written responses to a thematic-based essay. This year’s question was, “What do you think is the single most important societal problem and why?”
“The Burley Scholarship reflects our investment in the next generation of credit union members,” said Richard Wright, RTN treasurer/CEO. “RTN is proud to play a role in helping to make the goal of higher education a bit more financially accessible for our member families.”
