Worcester man arrested for alleged break-in at Westborough store

Westborough – Police Chief Alan Gordon released this statement earlier today-

On 12/23/14, at approximately 6:00 AM, Sgt. Chester Hallice discovered a break into “The Whiz” which is located at 122 Turnpike Rd. An investigation revealed that a suspect broke in through the front door at 11:45 PM the previous night. Cash, dragon figurines and magic cards worth several thousand dollars were stolen in the break.

Herald to serve as interim Marlborough fire chief

Marlborough – Mayor Arthur Vigeant recently announced that former Danbury (Conn.) Fire Department Chief Geoffrey R. Herald will serve as interim fire chief in the city of Marlborough starting Jan. 5. Herald will take over for Chief Jim Fortin, who retired at the end of December 2014 after a 31-year career, all with the city.

According to a press release from the mayor’s office, Herald comes to Marlborough from the city of Danbury, the seventh largest municipality in the state of Connecticut with a population of 80,000. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter for Danbury in 1974, rising through the ranks and being named chief in 2007. Herald concluded his accomplished career in Danbury last July after leading the department for seven years.

Westborough – Like many moms, Yolanda Hernandez works outside the home so she can provide a good life for her kids. Her son, Christopher is 13, and daughter, Emma, is 4. A unit secretary in the Umass Memorial University Campus emergency room since 2001, Hernandez is also taking classes at Quinsigamond Community College towards attaining her associate degree in general health studies with the hopes of someday becoming a respiratory therapist.

Marlborough fire chief retires, will continue fire service training

Marlborough – Marlborough Fire Chief James Fortin will officially step down as chief at the end of December but will continue to serve in the field of public safety. When he announced his retirement last January, he mentioned his “passion for public safety and the fire services.”

He said, “Educating and instructing future generations of firefighters is something I look forward to doing more of as I move on to pursue new opportunities.”
