On this day in 1901, Annie Edson Taylor became the first person, at age 63, to go over the Niagara Falls in a barrel.

On this day in 1926, magician Harry Houdini gave his last performance, in spite of running a fever of 104 degrees and suffering from acute appendicitis. He died a week later at the age of 52.

Today is Tuesday, Oct. 23, the 297th day of 2012.

On this day in 1983, 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers were killed after a suicide bomber drove a truck filled with 2,200 pounds of explosives into an U.S. Marine Corps barracks at the Beirut International Airport. A few minutes later, a second bomber drove into the basement of the nearby French paratroopers’ barracks, killing 58 more people.

Felix Baumgartner has become an instant celebrity for completing a 24-mile record setting parachute jump. But on this day in 1797 it was a French man, André-Jacques Garnerin, who made the first successful parachute jump. He did his from a hydrogen balloon 3,200 feet above Paris.

On this day in 1913, 250 coal miners were killed in an explosion in Dawson, New Mexico.

It was on this day in 1987 that “Black Monday,” one of the most dismal days in the stock market's history, fell. On that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 508 points, or 22 percent of its total.

In a World Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on this date in 1977, “Mr. October,” aka New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson, hit three home runs in a row off of three consecutive pitches from three different pitchers.

On this day in 1767, English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon completed their survey of the boundary between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland as well as areas that would eventually become the states of Delaware and West Virginia. The men did so at the behest of the Penn and Calvert families, to solve a land dispute.

On this day in 1998, 700 people died when a pipeline exploded in Jesse, Nigeria. The cause of the explosion, which resulted in a massive fire that burned for nearly a week, was never determined.

Region – Today is Wednesday, Oct. 17, the 291st day of 2012.

On this day in 1814 a huge vat of beer ruptured at a London brewery, subsequently knocking over other vats. Eight people drowned in the more than 135,000 imperial gallons of beer that flowed in the incident that is now known as the “London Beer Flood.”

On this day in 1987, an 18-month-old Texas girl, Jessica McClure, was rescued after being trapped for two and half days in an abandoned well near her aunt's daycare center. Millions of people around the globe watched the dramatic rescue of “Baby Jessica.”
