Westborough – Over the last few years, it has been a common, vexing problem for town officials – trucks attempting to pass under the low CSX railroad bridge on East Main Street (Route 30) end up getting stuck.
Although there are signs leading up to the bridge and the structure itself is clearly marked “DANGER? – ??? 12″ 6″ – LOW BRIDGE,” many truckers still try to go under the bridge.
Officials are now hoping that using a new warning system will help alleviate further problems.
On Sept. 12 crew from the company Central Mass. Signal installed solar powered pole-mounted lasers set at the height of the bridge on either side of the road approximately 200 yards away from the bridge. ?If a truck goes by that will not fit under the bridge, a laser will go off triggering another sign several feet away to flash a warning message alerting the driver of the danger.
The Board of Selectmen voted at their meeting May 27 to award a $35,000 contract to Central Mass. Signal to erect the new warning system. The monies will come from mitigation funds that were negotiated with CSX.
